Why Having a Will Matters

A valid Will makes sure:

  • Your estate goes exactly where you choose

  • Guardians are appointed for your children

  • Your partner is protected (especially if unmarried)

  • Your home, pets, and sentimental items are looked after

  • Family disputes are reduced

  • Inheritance Tax can be minimised with early advice

Without a Will, the Intestacy Rules decide who inherits - often not what you would want.

Understanding Probate

“Probate” is a word that worries many people, especially when asked to be an executor—but it’s far less intimidating once explained.

What is Probate?
It’s the legal document that allows the executor to handle the estate’s bank accounts, pensions, shares, and property.
It’s usually needed for estates over £5,000 and can take six months or more.

If there’s no Will:
The closest relative can apply to be the Administrator and request Letters of Administration - but unmarried partners cannot apply unless legally married or in a civil partnership.
